Community Speedwatch

Community Speedwatch

Following ongoing concerns from the Parish Council and residents of the village the council are currently in the process of working with Cleveland Police to introduce a community speedwatch initiative. The main areas for concern that have been highlighted are the entrances/exits to the village and in front of the school. Although we were successful in introducing a 20 mph limit around the area of the school and The Green, it is felt that more is needed to address the speed at which vehicles are travelling.

Community Speedwatch is a national initiative where proactive members of local communities join with the support and supervision of their local police to record details of speeding vehicles using approved detection devices.  Registered keepers of vehicles exceeding the speed limit are contacted – initially with a letter explaining the potential risks and consequences of their dangerous behaviour. Repeat offenders will receive a visit from the local police, irrespective of where they live. Beyond these friendly gestures, focused enforcement and criminal prosecution follow based on the collated evidence.

We have currently provided information regarding the locations and times that we feel would be best to monitor and also have a number of volunteers who have offered their support. Councillor Bigerstaff has been working alongside Cleveland Police in February 2022 in order to complete the necessary training and risk assessments to allow this to go ahead in the near future.

Update March 2022

Wolviston Community Speed watch is now underway thanks to officers from Cleveland Police, and help from Parish Councillors. The first session ran in March and was a success with a number of vehicles found to be exceeding the speed limit within the village, those drivers will be receiving a letter from Cleveland Police.  Another speed watch will take place at a later date.
